U8's - Wahroonga Gala Day 17.7.10
The one hour delay of game got to the boys in game 1 as a stacked Chatswood side managed to score 7 unanswered tries. Hunter Bird and Tevita Faupula took the game to Chatswood with strong runs and tough tackling. Charles Cullen had an energetic run cut short by a solid Chatswood defence. Daniel Gabb and Zach Izzard got in on the action with fast feet but couldn’t break the defensive line. Reilly Witham and Joshua Patteson did well in the rucks to regain possession and good hands from Jackson Thompson ensured we kept trying to the break through.
Game 2 saw the boys dig in against Wahroonga Green with some hard tackling from Robin Daly. Hunter and Tevita once again contributed strongly on the tackling and runs stats with Ben Montgomery adding to his seasons try tally with another scintillating run down the right wing. Ben tried his luck down the left wing but was caught in mid air with a heavy tackle that needed the attention of the St John’s ambulance crew to put the wind back in his sails. Reilly again showed his mastery of the ruck this time ably assisted by Naasson Hill and Joshua Patteson with Zach showing menace in the mauls. Jackson’s safe hands saw passes to Daniel and Charles rewarded with some yard gaining runs. All in all a great effort from the boys with a much tighter result going down just 3 tries to one.
With respect to the last two matches the cubs put on a dominant performance against the Wahroonga Blues and Norths by running in two tries to one against the Blues and leaving Norths scoreless with six tries by fulltime.
Although the cubs began the day with two very difficult matches their spirit never abated. They regrouped and made a strong charge home in their last two matches to finish off with two impressive wins. Against the Waratah Blues the boys ran out on to the field with all engines firing. They defended well with Daniel, Zachary, Benjamin, Hunter and Tevita pulling off some very big hits forcing the opposition to give up possession of the ball. This set the platform for our razzle dazzle ball runners to do their stuff and eventually two opportunities were presented for Daniel and Zachary to cross the Blue’s try line. All in all every cub on the field contributed to the win one way or another with impressive rugs and mauls, and supporting the ball runner.
The final match against Norths saw few of our players filling in for Norths as they were short of players. With good sportsmanship some of our young players eagerly volunteered to make up the numbers for Norths. Again, Daniel stood out by running in three tries and making four tackles, while Hunter scored twice with Lachlan crossing over for one. In the rugs and mauls Jimmy was very impressive and courageous against some of the bigger forwards from Norths. Tevita, Reilly, Charlie, Robin, Naasson, Zachary, Benjamin and Lachlan all played well as they ran and passed the ball, as well as supporting one another. The boys really enjoyed the hit out at Wahroonga and with all the players hopefully back by next week the parents can expect more amazing display of big hits and running rugby from the boys in the last stretch of the season. Wahroonga Gala day was a beautiful day for rugby and our boys put on an exceptional team effort and an entertaining display of individual skills all around. Men of the Matches were Daniel and Hunter.
Thanks to all the boys who played up on Saturday, and to our boys who took them on as team mates.
